Okay! Just watched this movie at AMC Theaters and need to get my opinion out, even though I doubt anyone will be reading this or respond since this account is super dead. I'm pretty sure I can't write anything lengthy on Instagram and Twitter (or X? I don't know, Twitter sucks now).

Now obviously spoiler warning from here on out.

Okay Beginning. I honestly liked the movie but it could have been better. It went in a new direction which is surprising for Digimon, and focused more on a story over action, and the action was very short-lived and just a smidge anti-climatic.

Oh boy how do I tackle this. I'll go over the pros first before getting to the cons.

Pros:

Characters: I loved getting to watch this in dub! It was so great to have some of the original voice cast to come back, and getting to hear the Davis, Veemon, and Ken I grew up with again! The character who got the best screen time was hands down Yolei! I was surprised how much they upped her character and she was the on-going drive leading the group and conversations, and I really liked it! Definitely made her feel more like the Izzy of the group which is nice, and she's actually going around doing computer stuff with the other Digi-Destined around the world. The best part was that they really kept going into the Ken x Yolei moments and that was adorable! x3

Davis and Ken are just like how they were in 02. Davis being the irrational leader that executes a questionable plan, and Ken being more rational than Davis and has to be his anchor from making a bad decision, but still hinted towards their growth over the years.

Kari and TK were nice too even though they had to be incredibly handicapped in this movie since they're trying to focus on just the Adventure 02 elements (hence why Angewomon got beat so fast). Kari as always is the most sympathetic, really feeling empathy for Ukkomon as it was all a misunderstanding. TK honestly didn't have much, he's learning how to drive, and really dropping the jokes when it came with Davis questioning how the police keep finding them. It was nice though how he was still being considerate that despite the dangers of losing their bond, they still need to take action but its not just their bonds their risking but all the other Digi-Destined in the world, populated at a whopping 60,000 and doubling in numbers every year?!!!

Cody definitely felt like the weakest link, albeit staying true to his character, like at least he had access to the place they went to in order to plan out their actions and piece together the whole story. Oh man when he was about to say something profound and freaking Davis smacks him straight in the face with a snowball was a good laugh! xD

Then lastly Lui Ohwada. Okay by all accounts yes I really liked this character! This was 100% the opposite of what happened with Meiko in Tri. They went HARD into Lui and his damaged backstory! Father ill, mother overworking herself to keep everything together and if that unravels even a little bit she lashes out at her son mentally and physically oof that was sad, then to top it off its his birthday! A birthday he rarely gets because its on Feb. 29! They designed this boy to have such a hard life. I was honestly on the fence when Ukkamon was face-to-face with the Mom and suddenly she was completely different person and the entire time I felt the eerie uncomfortableness cause you can tell Ukkamon did something bad, and my god the eye scene was completely terrifying with the blood and all, and Lui having a complete mental breakdown upon discovering what Ukkamon did over all the years and now permanently changed his eye to a non human one. This was by all accounts heartbreaking because at the end it was all a misunderstanding but Lui just thought his Digimon partner was nothing but selfish and unwilling to listen and that harsh view from Lui (who's happiness Ukkomon prioritized above all else) just completely shattered Ukkomon's heart. Yup! That's how you make a compelling new character!

All the Digimon were just their adorable selves! Veemon completely relates with Davis on such a deep level, Hawkmon loyal to Yolei but also cares for everyone, Armadillomon just being goofy (his voice was a hard adjust though), Patamon just being an adorable guy and upbeat even when he doesn't know what's going on, Gatomon trying to be mature, and Wormmon always adorably around Ken, supportive, and doesn't like seeing girls flirting with Ken! Ukkomon is a very cute Digimon especially when they sang Happy Birthday to Lui, while you could tell it was doing something wrong it truly wanted to make his partner happy, and honestly thought smiling meant happiness. I won't lie though every time I looked at Ukkomon I couldn't stop seeing Phione (the Pokemon), the designs are crazy similar, but it turns out they're both based off the same creature called the Clione so I guess it's justified.

Story: Generally they had a good story around Lui and Ukkomon and ultimately lead to these two working out their relationship by communicating with each other better from here on out. Also how the Digivice was the foundation of the bond established between Tamer and Digimon, but now everyone's bond with their Digimon is so strong now they don't need the Digivice anymore and can operate without it. For those worried if this means they can't digivolve their Digimon anymore don't be, the message is they can pull off those feats now without it.

Animation: Fantastic! The animation for the Digimon was incredible and hands down this is the best I've ever seen for all of the Adventure 02 Digimon, Imperialdramon Fighter Mode was sooooo good!!!!! The icing on the cake was staying true to the original Digivolution sequences from the series! Seriously I was completely shocked how they actually reanimated the old 02 digivolution scenes, especially with Paildramon, Imperialdramon DM, and FM's digivolution scenes! The weak CGI is gone and replaced with better 3D animation and the 3D environment changed from 3D to 2D and it looks gorgeous!!!

Imperialdramon Fighter Mode: HE FINALLY GOT ANOTHER WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Yggdrasil! For those who don't know, my biggest gripe with 02 was how Imperialdramon FM was handled. He legit only got ONE WIN in the series, and that win was only against an Ultimate Level Digimon, he tied with Wargreymon and BlackWargreymon, and every other Mega he faced he got beat or couldn't even damage them (And no Paladin Mode's win doesn't count, that a win just for PM). All his entries state how he's a powerhouse of a Digimon but I'm sorry 02 did him dirty. Its nice to finally see him get another win, I'm just hoping that the form Ukkomon took was at least a Mega Level. xD

Also I love how they updated Imperialdramon's carrier function! Instead of just standing on their back with a faint blue glowing bubble around them, they changed it and now they just enter inside of Imperialdramon's body, and this hub place where they stay in looks crazy cool!

Neutral:

I was mindblown when they showed Omnimon and Armageddemon on the TV! Why? Because Revenge of Diaboromon was NEVER CONFIRMED CANON! It was mostly believed to be not canon so I can't believe we got another canon movie from the past! As at the time only the Digimon Adventure movie (Young Tai and Kari and the giant Agumon one) and Our War Game were the only canon movies back then. Its crazy cool they confirmed it but its not one of my favorites so this new fact only has a neutral feeling for me, but for anyone that is, yeah they must be crazy happy right now.

Okay its time!

Cons:

Oooooh boy. Okay lets just start with Lui: Was he a good character? Yes! Now remember when I said he was 100% the opposite of what happened with Meiko, well sadly it goes too hard. This movie was so crazy focused on Lui that this didn't feel like a story about the Adventure 02 kids! This was just about Lui and Ukkomon and the others were just there. The 02 kid's only role was just educating and guiding Lui on about the power of bonds and reaching out and sympathize from Ukkomon's perspective but with how little presence they had on the plot it hurts. I get the story but it just didn't balance out like it did with Hurricane Touchdown, where Davis and Willis were the two central characters of the story and one didn't overstep over the other.

The Origin of the Digivice: Uuuugh. Kizuna JUST went over the Digivice and why it only works for kids. Then we get another addition to the Digivice and now their creation and bonds originated from Ukkomon because of Lui's wish. If Ukkomon created them how does that tie in with Gennai and the others picking the kids from the Greymon vs Parrotmon event, and how they had Digi-Eggs and Crests made for them? How does that tie into the Digi-Destined before Tai and his group (two of which we saw in Tri)? I get how Lui and Ukkamon were the first pair to become Digi-Destined because they happened before the Tai, Kari and Koromon fiasco (the first movie) but again the First Digi-Destined were full grown adults way older than Tai and his friends, and Lui is confirmed to be just as old as Kari so it doesn't line up in the timeline.

Plot Holes and No Follow Up:

Ukkomon is cute but there's way too much that's left unanswered about this Digimon! What happened to Ukkomon?! Ukkomon just melted and poofed out of existence, and BAM shows up years later as a giant Digi-Egg to grant Lui's first wish on his current birthday and is now displaying a phenomenal new form that is unexplained. WHO IS THE BEING THAT UKKOMON IS CONNECTED WITH?! It was brought up twice how he has a connection to some kind of power or deity! Then that fact is never brought up again nor answered even though that is the whole crux behind its powers!

The Action: Again its a shame how little action there was. I mean it was gorgeously animated don't get me wrong but its a shame it was so short! Legit they had only one battle and the threat was so minimal that they didn't even need to achieve another form to beat the threat. Is there a way they could have fixed this? YES! By all accounts when they defeated Ukkomon I was expecting the win to be a false sense of security because what I thought was going to happen (and should have happened) was that the previously mentioned Being that Ukkkomon was connected with was going to get mad and take control, and become a much bigger threat than what was presented with Ukkomon in control. This would have upped the stakes and FM can still keep that win against the prior form under his belt cause he needs it! This could have helped the action go on longer, and given the 02 kids more time and focus (as again they needed way more focus cause it was too focused on Lui and Ukkomon). Then how would they end this fight you asked? With a new form? No! I was honestly so sad because I thought this movie was foreshadowing which form Imperialdramon FM would get and I thought it would have been Imperialdramon Paladin Mode, cause they showed off earlier and legit confirmed that the Revenge of Diaboromon movie was canon so Paladin Mode is canon! So it broke my heart that they didn't go with that route and that scene wasn't foreshadow! It would have been so cool and a way to get more action with Paladin Mode since his action was pretty weak in that movie too. (Silphymon and Shakkoumon getting their Megas and all three Megas beat the threat would have been nice too.) Would they have needed Omnimon? Honestly I thought they were gonna confirm that they gained that form and just have general access to it now without needing Omnimon after the movie and that would have been the maximum climatic point of the movie with a new digivolution sequence added to boot for this form. Again just sad this wasn't the route they took and I really thought they would.

So yeah I like the movie, it was good! All the 02 references were great, it just a shame that the focus was taken off Davis and them for too long. It could have done more. My brother believes they could be sequel baiting since the title is The Beginning, I doubt it though since its suppose to be referring to Lui and Ukkomon being the first partners that began everything that happened in Digimon, but if there is a sequel, I legit wouldn't mind because if there is a bigger story behind this that is going to tackle on the things that really need a follow-up, that would nice. Considering they never addressed the plot holes and loose threads in Tri though those odds are crazy low! =w=

And that is the end of my review! A good movie and I would still recommend it for 02 fans because it's still worth watching it for them.

While DeviantArt has become mostly dead for me, I'm still active with art albeit slowly on my other art accounts. Sadly I know its been crazy slow, but I've mostly been busy with college and games. Just been accepted to CSUN and I'm already two semesters in going for Animation 2D and its been a blast so far! I'll try to work up some small stuff from time to time but just know I do have one big project in the works. (Well technically I have multiple big projects in the work but this is one that's gonna be happening the soonest!) All I can say is be hyped for Odaiba Day this year cause I'm bringing in something big this year!!!! >:3

It got temporarily restricted. I'm not sure why? Says there was unusual activity and not sure what I did, but now it wants me to send a Confirmation code to my phone number, and for some reason Twitter can't send my code to my number. To top it off after numerous attempts to get this to work I've now apparently maxed out my attempts and have to wait tomorrow to try again. Soooooo if I can't get those to work might have to just give up on my Twitter account. I hope not cause I was generally enjoying it more than Instagram. TuT
